When Lara arrives at Roth's position, she finds him badly wounded by a pack of wolves, who stole his rucksack and contained their radio and medical supplies. Lara tracks down the pack and bandages Roth's wounds; when he recovers, he informs her that the radio transponder must be linked up with a radio tower at the top of a nearby mountain in order to boost its signal and call for rescue. Because Roth cannot climb with his injured leg, Lara climbs the mountain, discovering that the armed men on the island are a cult named the Solarii, led by Mathias. She makes her way to the top of the radio tower and manages to get the distress call off, signaling the pilots of a rescue plane. However, as they begin to approach to pick the survivors up, a thunderstorm materializes out of thin air and destroys the plane, accompanied by a thundering voice shouting in Japanese that "No one ever leaves". Shocked, Lara makes her way back down the mountain and attempts to rescue one of the pilots, who is injured but was able to parachute out of the plane. She tracks him to the base of a monastery, only to find that the Solarii took him captive and booby-trapped him. As she approaches, they attempt to ambush her, seeking revenge for all the Solarii that she had killed. She manages to survive the ambush, but is knocked unconscious by strange figures referred to as oni, dressed in ancient samurai armor and carrying ancient Japanese weapons. She awakens hanging from the ceiling in a room filled with hundreds of human remains, but manages to escape. As she makes her way through the monastery, she sees Solarii cultists being killed by the samurai throughout the monastery. Eventually, she finds herself in a ritual chamber, with the remains of the legendary Sun Queen Himiko and several ancient paintings that depict a ritual involving the pouring of water and a transfer of power between the Queen and a Priestess. The cultists find Lara and she is forced to leave the monastery, making her way towards the cultists' stronghold when she discovers that Alex, Jonah, Grim, Reyes, and Sam have all been captured by the Solarii.
